Our tagline is “Healthy Earth, Healthy Lawn, Healthy Family.” Take a look below to find out why…
Healthy Earth
The Stewart Family has been in Davidson County since the Revolutionary War era. We come from a long line of farmers and I was no different growing up here in Davidson County on a farm myself. My grandfather and I worked endlessly in the fields harvesting produce and took our yield to the farmer’s market in Winston-Salem every Saturday morning. I distinctly remember one Saturday morning when I was 8 years old, a customer asked “is this produce organic?” I then asked my grandfather what that meant and he replied “they want to know if we used chemicals to spray the insects.” My grandfather was very honest and told them that minimal sprays were used early in the growth process to protect the crop. This was the 1980’s and before it was cool to be “organic”, but this experience did get me to think about what these sprays really do to our health. As I grew older and learned more about health and science, I began to realize the harmful side effects of toxic chemicals in our food, consumer goods, and yes, our yards. I truly believe that we are all stewards of this planet. We only get one and we should take care of it as best as we can. Therefore our company is committed to using safe products in our services that are as eco-friendly as possible.
Healthy Lawn
When it comes to our lawns, one of the first things we think of is weeds and how they can wreck havoc on our ideal yard. So what do most folks do? They go to the local home and garden store, buy a weed killer and spray it all over the yard. We have all done it, no judgement. But have you ever looked at the back of the container and noticed the long list of chemicals that most of us can’t even pronounce? Go to the garage and try it for yourself. Every one of those chemicals could potentially have a harmful side effect on your lawn, the soil, and the ground water system. Thinking back to my experience at the farmer’s market as a child, I wondered when did these chemicals come about and why? How did they control weeds generations ago when chemicals weren’t available? So again I asked my grandfather. He told me, and I later verified, that most of the chemicals used on farms and lawns today came from chemicals developed during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Yes, warfare brought about a lot of these chemicals. Did you know 2 4 D, a chemical found in a lot of weed killers today, was a main ingredient used in napalm during the Vietnam War? Its true, look it up for yourself. As far as what they used generations ago before chemicals, my grandfather told me it was all about the soil. The healthier the soil, the less likely weeds could thrive and that meant feeding the soil the nutrients it needed. Our focus here at Stewart Natural Landscapes is to take a natural approached backed by science to manage soil quality and improve the overall health of your lawn without the aid of harmful chemicals.
Healthy Family
Now this is were it all comes together. We want a beautiful lawn to enjoy. The kids play in the yard, the pets roll around in the yard, we grill and enjoy a cold beverage on a hot day in the yard, right? But if we are spraying harmful chemicals on the lawn, how well are we protecting our families? When herbicides are sprayed they can drift throughout the atmosphere spreading to your family and your neighbor’s family. That same herbicide can be smelt days later in the yard. It seeps into the ground water that we eventually drink and use in our homes. Its all over your children and pets as they come in and out of the house and getting into their skin. Is this really what we want for our families? I think most of us would agree, this is indeed not what we want for our families. There is a trickle down effect in place here. If we are good stewards of the Earth by using natural processes to create the landscapes we desire, we are ultimately taking great care of our families. In addition, having a lawn and landscape that is beautiful and healthy has been proven to not only bring about positive physical health by reducing blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, and muscle tension by decreasing the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol that elicit fight or flight but also bring about positive mental and emotional health as well by reducing anger, fear, depression, and stress by increasing the release of endorphins that elicit feelings of pleasure. Let’s work together to create a Healthy Earth, Healthy Lawn, and Healthy Family!
